Darel Harpole was born on June 12, 1931 in Logan, Iowa to parents Clyde and Mabel (Kiersch) Harpole. At the age of 5 the family moved to Branson, Missouri, then to Hollister and Kirbyville, and back to a horse ranch north of Branson. At the age of 12 they moved to Percival, Iowa and he attended Percival High School for 3 years. For his senior year he attended and graduated from Sidney South High School.
Following high school he served 4 years in the US Army. He fought bravely in the Korean War and served 32 months in Japan.
In September 1954 he married the love of his life, Louise Everett. They moved to Nebraska City and he worked at the local Safeway Stores. In 1957 he was transferred to Sioux City, Iowa where they were blessed with daughter Dee.
In the fall of 1958 he began working for Kraft Foods and the family moved to O'Neill, Nebraska for a short time and then to Omaha after accepting a job with Butternut Bread. It was after this move to Omaha that they were blessed with son Bill.
In 1960, Darel began working for the US Post Office as a city carrier followed by a rural carrier in 1976. He worked for the USPS until his retirement in 1990.
Darel died on Friday, August 3, 2018, at Bergan Mercy Hospital at the age of 87 years, 1 month, 21 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Mabel Harpole; grandson Michael McCracken; brothers Dean and Vern Harpole; sisters Virginia Sutton and Janice McGee.
Darel is survived by his wife Louise of Ralson, NE; daughter Dee (Mark) McCracken of Ralston, son William Harpole of Ralston; grandchildren Mindi (Gene) Hellbusch of Omaha, Michelle (Tanner) Wegner of Whiteman Air Force Base, MO, Samantha (Nick) Jones of Overland Park, KS, and Mallory Harpole of Omaha; great-grandchildren Jenna and Kaleb Hellbusch, Max and Emmy Wegner, and Devyn Jones; sister Margaret Faust of Akron, IA; brother Jerry Harpole of Seaside, CA; brother-in-law Jack McGee of Columbia, MO; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Darel was a lifetime member of the Ralston American Legion, VFW, Omaha Fish and Wildlife Club and was a member of the Rural Carrier Union.
