Eugene "Gene" S. Tschida

December 5, 1929 — August 5, 2020

Eugene (Gene) Stephen Tschida was born 12/5/29 in Detroit, Michigan, to Stephen and Edna Tschida. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, which Gene considered his home town. He attended grade and high school in Madison, graduating in 6/47. He began his banking career in 8/47, at First National Bank of Madison, as a messenger. His banking years were interrupted by 4 years in the U.S. Navy from 2/51 - 1/55. His duty was in Navy finance. He married Betty Burton in 1953, and had two children, Alan and Linda. His wife passed away in 1961. He married Alberta Kasparek in 1963 and they had a son, Ronald.

He is preceded in death by parents Stephen and Edna, sister Barbara (Bud); brother Don; first wife Betty; and great grandson Oliver.

Survived by his wife Alberta; children Alan (Gay), Linda, and Ronald (Teresa); 7 grandchildren; 4 great - grandchildren; and sister-in-law Sherl of Madison, WI.

In 11/59, Gene and family moved to Bellevue, NE, where he was an officer in Bank of Bellevue. In 1/67 he became President of Clarke Bank in Papillion which changed its name to Bank of Papillion. Gene left the bank in 6/85 and took a position as head of the investigations unit for the FDIC until 6/88. In 7/88, Gene joined the Bank of Nebraska in La Vista, serving as president until his retirement, partially in 1997 and remained on the Board of Directors.

After retirement, Gene pursued his hobbies of traveling, diving, skiing, tennis, golf, bike riding, and reading. He also continued involvement in local civic groups.

The Nebraska Bankers Association honored him with a 58 year banking service recognition and a 60 year plaque.

During his naval service, which began as a reservist 12/46, he received the good conduct medal, the National Defense Award, United Nations Service Award, a Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Korean Defense Medal with four stars.

Gene served the Boy Scouts, both as a scout and later as a leader, for 50 years. He was an Eagle scout and a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, a scouting honor society. He earned the Wood Badge for camping and leadership skills and received the Silver Beaver award.

Significant civic service was given to Midlands Community Hospital where he served on the Board of Trustees for 22 years, the last nine as Chairman until the hospital was sold. Another long time service was to Monarch Villa, in Papillion, where he served as first President and then as Treasurer for many years. He was a Jaycee, receiving the Outstanding Young Man Award in 1963. As a co-founder and first president of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, Gene had the rare experience of being a Chamber President and Jaycee President at the same time. He also was President of the Papillion Chamber of Commerce. He held a graduate certificate from the American Institute of Banking and was a graduate from the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking in 1966, and held a Bachelor of Science Degree from Bellevue University.

He was a life member of the Papillion American Legion. Gene said that a person should pay their civic rent on the space they occupy and his community service for many years shows he practiced that belief. He belonged to several civic groups and was a major participant in forming and serving on the Nebraska State Patrol Metro Area Motorist Assist Program, which caused some of his friends to wonder if he had a death wish!

Gene served on the 'chain gang' for the Papillion La Vista football team since 1967.
Gene and his wife, Alberta, traveled extensively including some rather vigorous white water rafting trips and he was often called upon by friends to give them tips on what to see in places they would be traveling to. I t can be safely said that Gene was competitive and always seemed to have something going. His family has shared some of his experiences with us.

Loving and caring for his family, loyal to his friends, Gene played a part in a lot of our lives. He often expressed the thought that life was like a trip and he sure enjoyed the view and participated whole-heartedly on the journey.

Services will be held at a later date.
