On December 31, 1968, Evelyn met the love of her life, Duane Elgersma, while on a Christmas trip to southern California. The next six months were filled with letters as Duane and Evelyn (Butch and Evie to those who knew them best) got better acquainted. She was finishing her last semester of college and Butch was finishing his last six months in the United States Army. During this period, Evie accepted a contract to teach 4th grade at Bellflower Christian Schools in Bellflower, California.

On August 19, 1980, Annette Renee was born to Butch and Evie's growing family.
In November 2016, Butch and Evie joined daughters Gina and Annette in the Omaha area and made their home in La Vista, Nebraska, and spent five wonderful years watching their grandchildren grow, enjoying many athletic and musical events as well as numerous camping trips. She also treasured her role as a mentor mom with the MOPs ministry.
