Gerald William Schmidt, 80, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on the 6th of November, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on the 4th of September, 1943, in St. Michael, Nebraska, Buffalo County. Gerald was affectionately known as "Gary" to his family and friends. Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Claudia A. (Cremeen) Schmidt, and their three sons: G. Robert Schmidt (Kim), Jon Schmidt (Cherie), and Tim Schmidt (Andrea). He was a cherished grandfather to Jacob, Wyatt, Van, and Jamie Schmidt. Gary was preceded in death by his beloved parents, William H. Schmidt and Blanche M. Schmidt, as well as his dear sister, Laura J. Schmidt. Gary received his primary education at Newberg schoolhouse near Hazard, Nebraska. He later graduated from Ravenna High School in 1961, followed by earning his degree from Milford Community College in 1963. Responding to the call of duty, Gary served his country with honor in the U.S Army, enlisting in 1964. Gary and Claudia married in 1966 and were stationed in Homestead, FL. After leaving the Army in 1967, Gary and family moved to the east coast to work for Raytheon, the designer of the Hawk Missile system he had worked on in the Army. After returning to family in Nebraska in 1970, Gary made the decision to return to school. In 1975, he proudly graduated from the Creighton University School of Pharmacy. Throughout his professional career, Gary made significant contributions as a pharmacist and manager at Midlands Community Hospital. Alongside his healthcare endeavors, he was also the owner of Homecare Medical, Ashland Pharmacy and a medical equipment certification company. Gary had a thirst for adventure and took to the skies as a private pilot. He was also fond of exploring new destinations and tending to his farms, and enjoyed the company of friends and family. A visitation will be held on Sunday, the 12th of November, from 5 to 7 PM at Bethany Funeral Home in La Vista, Nebraska. A Vigil service will follow from 7 to 7:30 PM. On Monday, the 13th of November, a Vigil Mass will be held at 10:00 AM at St. Gerald Catholic Church. Gary will be laid to rest with military honors at Omaha National Cemetery on Monday, the 13th of November, at 1:30 PM. In memory of Gary, any contributions can be made to St. Gerald Catholic Church. Gary Schmidt leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and dedication. His absence will be deeply felt and forever missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
