Hyun Sook Jo, a loving mother, and devoted grandmother, passed away on 6th November 2022 at the age of 83 years. She was born in Jinhae, South Korea on 6th September 1939 to Suk Ku Kong and Young Hwa Kim,
Hyun emigrated from South Korea to the United States on 4th July 1969, following her husband who had settled in Omaha, Nebraska. Once arriving in Omaha, she learned to speak English while working at Brandeis where her co-workers helped her through the learning process and adjustment to a new culture in her new home. She felt such appreciation that when her husband gave her a large monetary gift for her birthday, she treated her co-workers to lunch as a “Thank you” for their support instead of spending it on herself. Some of her co-workers became life-long friends.
Hyun graduated from Hamsung Girls High School in 1958 in Busan, South Korea. She later mastered the skill of dressmaking and was an excellent seamstress. Bringing this with her to the United States and the skills learned at Brandeis, Hyun started her own business making custom window draperies. In addition to this, to support her family, Hyun also worked nights at Control Data as a disk inspector until the company closed the facility in 1985. During that time, she also attended classes at Metropolitan Community College while raising 3 children.
In the years following, Hyun continued with her successful business with draperies and earned her Associate Degree in Interior Design.
Hyun also had a strong faith in God. She was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in La Vista, Nebraska for more than 30 years. She also sang in the church choir, often providing solo performances, for many of those years.
Hyun is survived by her husband of 64 years, Sung, children Yung Mi Von Quast, Jeffrey Jo (wife Monette) and Nina Jo-Ring (husband Matt Ring), grandchildren Maximilian Von Quast and Nicholas & Reagan Ring, her sisters Han Soon Kong, Myung Jo Kong, Sun Mi Kong, Yung Soon Kong and brother Shin Sung Kong.
