Janice married Gary Schrage on April 22, 1972, and they made their home in Wayne, Nebraska, for two years. Janice worked at the Wayne hospital during that time. They moved to Holstein, Iowa, in 1974, where Gary taught and Janice worked as a blueprint reader for VT Industries. Children Michael, Christina, and Scott were born during their years in Holstein. They moved to Mallard, Iowa, in 1987, and to Oakland, Iowa, in 1990. Janice worked in child care during those years. In 1993, they moved to Sloan, Iowa, their current home. While in Sloan, Janice worked for a time in security at a nearby casino.
Janice's first love was being a mother-- she was an amazing teacher and confidant, first for her children and, later, her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing chess, Scrabble, and card games, particularly pitch and poker, and she was more than a little competitive. She dabbled in poetry and watched classic movies and TV shows. She also liked to bake, and her cakes, bars, and cookies were the first to go. Her dogs, Coal and Brooklyn, were for years constant companions. While daughter Tina and son-in-law Aaron were travel-nursing in the mid-2000s, she enjoyed visiting them in California, Tennessee, Maryland, Virginia, D.C., and New York.
Janice is survived by her husband Gary; sons Michael Schrage of Omaha and Scott Schrage of Lincoln, Nebraska; son-in-law Aaron Moore and grandchildren Jack, Joseph, Grace, and Noah Moore of Omaha; brothers Bill (Sandy) Vanourney of Maryland Heights, Missouri, Larry (Dianne) Vanourney of Omaha, Ken (Patricia) Vanourney of London, Kentucky, Bob (Glenda) Vanourney of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dan Vanourney of Ashland, Nebraska; sister-in-law Carol Vanourney (George) Busteed of Elgin; aunts Helen Getta of Waukee, Iowa, Helen Schmitt of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Lois Schmitt of Fort Collins, Colorado; in-laws Rich and Mimi Moore of Sloan and Paul (Melody) Moore of Entiat, Washington; many cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Wilma Vanourney, daughter Christina Schrage Moore, brother Ron Vanourney, and brother Leonard (in infancy).
