Peter and Paul Parish, the parish of his birth and early education. He was a graduate of South High School and UNO, U.S. Navy World War II Veteran. A past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Joe was Parish Council President, active in CYO, the Croatian Choir, the parish festival and numerous other activities in the parish. He was past Commander of the American Legion Post #1, a member of the VFW, the Forty and Eight, the Nebraska American Legion Press Association, and the National Box Car Association. He was director of the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department, Legion Baseball, founder of the Youth Hockey League of Omaha, the Croatian Cultural Society, the All-Star game, Father and Son Game and anything else he could think of to have kids involved in active sports or Omahans to be aware of the Croatian Culture. He was the receipient of the Clarence Cody Kerr Memorial Award, cited for being the Youth Hockey Commissioner for twelve years, the All-American Baseball Commissioner for 27 years, the Youth Wrestling Director for 25 years, a member of the Nebraska Fraternal Congress for 15 years, Boys Club of Omaha board member. He served on the Nebraska American Legion Athletic Committee for 20 years, four times as state chairman. The Kerr Memorial Award is the highest honor bestowed on an individual by the Department of Nebraska. Additional leadership and awards are too numerous mention here.Visitation at Sts. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, July 13, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at the church. Bishop Blase J. Cupich, Celebrant. Interment St. John Cemetery. Military honors by American Legion Post #1.
