Joseph Charles Shulo
May 18,1952 – November 25, 2023
Preceded in death by his father, Joseph R. Shulo, mother, MaryAnn (Arnold) Shulo, Lady, his uppity self-entitled American Eskimo, and best swimming partner ever, Mishka, his lab-keeshond mix best bud.
Survived by wife, Jean (Absalon) Shulo; proud step-father to his intensely loved and admired stepson Bruce Brickner and his wife Sandy (Jones); his beyond beloved grandsons, Jesse (Ellen Simon) Brickner, Joseph (Hannah Malone) Brickner and Ben Brickner; his absolutely cherished great-grandsons Gannon, Oliver and Gordon, who he so looked forward to watching participate in ballgames and school programs; his devoted and oh so loved brother, Bill and his wife Caroyn (Claycamp) Shulo; nephews Jeff and Bill Shulo niece, Jessica Shulo, and many more loving relatives.
Joseph Charles Shulo, was a man of many names; Joseph, Joe, Jake, Joe-Joe and Maps Shulo. Family members called him Jake so that’s what he’ll go by in this tribute.
Jake was also a man of many characters; all out to get the better of you, in a fun, loving way. He was the brain pool I tapped, my Mr. Math and Engineer and boy did he love to share that knowledge with me even when I’d beg him not to. Illness wasn’t about to stop his pursuit of my higher learning, while lying in his hospital bed during his final days, Jake was attempting to teach me about the tree line and how it corresponded to drainage. Something I’m sure I’m going to use later in life
Jake loved to stump me with math problems, not that it was difficult to do, but why oh why first thing in the morning!?! Jake knew I wasn’t exactly a morning person; good morning, a kiss, a cup of coffee and leave me alone! Nope, not Jake, as I was getting ready for work, knowing that I am now a captive audience, he’d present me with my daily mind-blower. Really! Now? Even if I’d get angry, he’d persist on teaching me.
Jake loved to tell me tall tales and make them believable! I finally, having made a fool of myself on numerous occasions, convinced him to stop as I would, to my utter embarrassment, share my new-found knowledge with others only to realize I had been had!
At age 19, Jake enlisted in the National Guard and was part of the water purification crew. He often compared his team members to many of the characters on M*A*S*H; and this one I believe. Jake went on to become a civil engineer and was employed by the City of Omaha for well over 30 years.
Jake loved sports, boy did he love sports, especially baseball and Husker volleyball. He also loved to travel. At home, he enjoyed cooking and a mean, challenging crossword puzzle, relaxing in the pool, soaking up the sun’s rays and some suds. We were married for 31 years and he always loved to tell the story of our beach wedding and the swimsuit-clad, uninvited but most welcomed guests.
Jake was the most loving and patient caregiver I could have ever asked for and we had a beautiful, fun time while it lasted, with a few not-so-fun times, but, hey, who doesn’t. Jake loved his animals, especially his dogs, and leaves behind his best friend and comfort canine, Cardi. Jake will be missed by many family members and friends, and he will be talked about for years to come.…mostly good. Farewell for now my Prince, until we meet again.
Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date.
