Louis Raymond Whisonant was born in Lynwood, California, in 1946. His father's side of the family was from Winfield, Louisiana. Lou spent many summers there. The family moved to Omaha as his father found work at the Falstaff Brewery. They lived for many years in a house near 19th and Leavenworth. Lou attended Central High School, and then enlisted in the Naval Reserve, but unfortunately was released due to needing a hernia repair. He later went to UNO for three years, but as the war in Vietnam was progressing, he decided to enlist in the United States Army. Louis served in the Army from 1967 - 1972. He was stationed in Vietnam from 1968 - 1969, as a combat helicopter pilot for the 68th Assault Helicopter Company. Upon his return to the US, he was stationed in Fort Wolters, Texas, and was an instructor pilot from 1969 - 1972. In 1971, he received a direct commission to Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers. After his service time, he worked for a small engineering firm in Omaha as a land surveyor for several years before starting his own company. Louis Surveying was successful for 27 years. Subsequently, he worked as Sarpy County Surveyor for 6 years before retiring. Lou's hobbies included bowling, softball, and betting on the ponies, especially. Lou passed away on the morning of Monday, January 8, 2024, at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his wife, Deb; son Louis John Whisonant and his partner Emily Assman; daughter Sarah Louise Whisonant; grandson Milo Stodola; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gilbert and Mary Peers; niece Alisa Novak Shaul and husband David; nephews Scott Novak and Joseph Peers; niece Katie Peers.
