DR. MICHAEL DAMIAN CARABINE
SEPTEMBER 27, 1948 – June 29, 2022
Michael Damian Carabine was born in Port Arthur, Texas on September 27, 1948 to parents Peter John Carabine and Leona Myers Carabine. He passed away June 29, 2022 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Michael was proceeded in death by his parents: Father, Peter John Carabine and Mother, Leona Myers Carabine; and Father and Mother in Law, Oscar and Frances Croghan. Michael is survived by his wife Beth Carabine, sisters Donna Lewis and Marla Crippen; brothers Peter Carabine and Christopher Carabine; nephews Paul Lewis, Steven Lewis, Collin Carabine and Aaron Crippen; one Niece, Kristin Lewis; three step sons, Jim Dorsey and Wife Jess, Robert Dorsey and partner Julie Hartman, KC Barth and wife Jennifer. Michael also had six wonderful grandchildren, Sydney Dorsey, Will Dorsey, Louden Dorsey, Sofia Dorsey, Kaylen Barth and Cooper Barth.
He spent his childhood in Port Arthur working with his Father on his shrimp boats. He attended elementary school and Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur. He studied at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas with a premedical curriculum. He graduated medical school with honors on December 5, 1982. He then studied at Tech University Health Sciences in Lubbock, Texas for the Internal Medicine program from July 1, 1984 to June 30, 1985. Upon graduation he received an Internship Certificate. He did his psychiatric residency at Cherokee, Iowa between 1987-1990 and graduated with board eligibility. He completed a residency in Neurology in June 1990 at University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He held medical licenses in both Nebraska and Iowa.
Michael dedicated his life to the truth that the patient always came first. His practice of medicine and mental health always embodied what is paramount in the medical field….“Do No Harm.” His path and career were never a job for Michael, it was a calling, and one he answered without pause or exception. Because of his caring nature and countless good deeds, the world was a better place to live in because of him. He was never off duty and was always just a phone call away. He took the time with both his patients and family to really listen and to help through difficult situations. He was loved and respected by his family, friends, coworkers, and by countless patients that were given an honorable second chance in life because of his tireless commitment to them. He loved his country and the men and women that served to protect it, and spent much of his career caring for Veterans all over the country, including Nebraska, Iowa, Texas and Louisiana. Michael was a free spirit and worked in various private practice situations and several Locum Tenens positions throughout Iowa, Nebraska and Texas. He did so much good in his life and was a kind and genuinely caring man
While pursuing his love of medicine and rehabilitation in Nebraska, Michael met his future wife Beth in a chance encounter in 1993 while selling a pickup to her younger brother, Mark. Michael had always lightheartedly joked that he got the better end of that deal, while maintaining the upkeep on her was way more than it would have been on that old truck. They were married May 24, 2003 in Omaha, Nebraska, but spent nearly every day of the last 29 years together!
Throughout Michael’s life, what he loved most were his six grandchildren. He spent countless hours and drove thousands of miles taking them on cross country adventures in one of his prized possessions, a late model conversion van that the grandkids affectionately named “Vanny.” Michael shared with them one of life’s most valuable lessons on those trips….It’s not the destination, but the journey they will remember most! He was always patient and delighted in seeing the world through their eyes, always looking for teachable moments. It was on these adventures where he shared with them his knowledge, insight, and sense of humor that only a Grandpa can impart. And most importantly he taught them every word of “Born to Be Wild!”
Michael spent much of his life traveling the country but never forgot where he came from. He and Beth always made time in life to return to Texas to spend time with his family as well. He is so loved, and will be missed!
