Richard E. Davis Colonel USAF Retired
Richard (Rick) Davis was a kind and gentle man who loved God, his family and his country. He was born May 12, 1936 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Luther and Vera (Crum) Davis.He grew up in Oklahoma along with his older brother Don.While going to college he met and married his loving wife of 64 years Vera (Crew) Davis.He graduated from Tulsa University and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
He served in the Air Force for 28 years retiring in 1989.During his time in the military he received a Master's degree in International Affairs from the University of Southern California. His extensive military decorations included a Bronze Star for bravery and honor during the Vietnam War and the Defense Superior Service Medal for superior service as the Director of Intelligence, HQ NORAD in Colorado Springs.
After his military career they moved to Kansas City where he resided for 23 years.In Kansas City Rick worked tirelessly for St Patrick Catholic Church.He and Vera led the RCIA program; he was on the church finance committee and was involved in many fundraising events.
He was a wonderful and proud father to his two daughters Dana and Sandi.He was delighted to finally have sons when Damian and Mike joined the family.He was equally proud as a Papa and Great Papa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The career military life took Rick and family to numerous places in the United States, Europe, and Asia.He especially loved his time in Germany, the Netherlands and Colorado.He enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, hiking and caring for his lawn and gardens.Rick was a lover of all animals and especially his cats.He was an avid baseball and football fan of the KC Royals and Chiefs.Very passionate about history he was quick to provide interesting and fun facts.
Rick's family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the many family and friends that helped us for the duration of his battle with Alzheimer's.We also thank the caring staff at Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home for the love and care they gave Rick during his nearly six year stay.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Vera Davis and his brother Donald.He is survived by his wife Vera Davis and daughters Dana (Damian) Guiney, Sandi (Mike) Smellie; Grandchildren Allison (Matt) Elsasser, Andrew (Allison) Guiney, Nicholas (Ashley) Smeelie, Natalie (Nick) Reynolds, four great grandchildren, Mother in law Marie Crew, Sister in law Barbara Crew, nieces Cindi Andrews, Judy Bird and nephews Scott Crew and Jerry Davis.
