Shirley Riha lived a remarkable life, deeply rooted in family, community service, and her passions.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Riha, parents James and Anna Hrabik, her brothers Stanley Hrabik, James Hrabik (and sister-in-law JoAnn), and Charles Hrabik (and sister-in-law JoAnn), and brothers in law, Frank Riha, Theodore Riha, Tom Riha and Robert Moore. She is also survived by many brothers-in law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many God Children.
Married on June 3, 1961 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, She was a proud Aunt to over 40 nieces and nephews and a godmother to over 20 family members.
Known for her warm and welcoming nature, Shirley was always the first-person friends and family turned to in times of need. She loved her family, pets, music—especially polkas—and enjoyed gardening, traveling, and hosting gatherings. The couple owned homes in Palm Springs, California, and Mesa, Arizona, but their main residence was in Springfield, Nebraska. She will be remembered for her smile, her positive look on life, her candy dish and bubblegum machine, and for the many pinches as a greeting to her nephews.
Shirley was actively involved in her community, with her husband, having donated a walking and biking trail in Springfield and supporting various charitable causes, including the Catholic Education Fund, which aids financially needy high school students. She and Louie were also long-time supporters of the Cattleman’s Ball, which funds cancer research, and she received the Sarpy County Crime Stopper Award for her assistance to law enforcement.
Shirley played a significant role in her husband's business ventures, including farming and real estate development, and when he was an active participant in local governance as a county commissioner. She will be fondly remembered for her infectious smile, community spirit, and the joy she brought to those. Shirley and Louie were instrumental in the development of the Midland’s Hospital and were also huge supporters of the Sarpy County Fair.
